Belgian artist Youniss released his second full-length album, White Space, through Ghent-based Viernulvier Records in 2023, and has returned with a four song Remix EP of tracks from the album. The tracks, remixed by DJ Haram, KMRU, Seigfried Komidashi, and Aram Santy further explore the emotions that Youniss initially explored on White Space, a work equal parts sonically ethereal and overwhelming. Aram Santy’s version of “Habitat” is the most straightforward, featuring heavily compressed percussion and a gorgeous bassline that perfectly compliments Youniss’ original vocal melody. KMRU’s version of “Walad” submerges a new drum pattern into the bottom of a mix of synths and various sounds impossible to discern, resulting in a droning meditative experience. Seigfried Komidashi’s remix of “Arms Bent Back,” and DJ Haram’s remix of “So Slow” transform both songs into spectral renditions of their original selves.
White Space’s heavy usage of synths, samples, and bashing drums traversed a spectrum ranging from grunge to hip-hop to provide a backdrop for Youniss to dolefully sing about his experience as a Black person living in Europe.
