Gods cruel joke was the very first piece of music I made for my debut EP, A Horse Named Proletariat.
I went to east coast Canada to help my friends do maintenance work on their house. Was living and working there for about 2 weeks.
My friends got married while in college and had their wedding in an old bath house on an island in the bay. The only people to witness it was themselves, the officiator, and a couple friends.
We went back to the bath house to visit and I watched them play-fight about who was allowed to die first, cause the other one was convinced that they couldn’t go on living without the other in their life.
The conversation was equally absurd and beautiful and was burned into my mind.
When I got back home I decided to take a stab at writing again. I don’t where this song came from, but it completely changed everything for me. The sounds and textures I heard in my head I could actually bring to life.
The verse lyrics are from journal entries I had scribbled in a mess but are from actual events that occurred in my own relationship.
The photo is from my time in Canada, it’s hard to make out but that’s the backyard of the house that over looks the bay. The light streak is the moon and the red sliver is the towers off in the distance.
It represents not only the inception of this song but how my music is sonically not what you’re expecting. This is country music through and through. I’m just blurring the lines.
