Hey this is Skwirl here to gab at you briefly about the records we have coming for our first thematic cluster! The theme is Circadian Rhythms and so as you might expect the records are presented to you by time of day. We have daylight, dusk, night and afterhours selections for you.
Ehye - “Forgot My Password”
Finally- if you’ve been keeping up, hello! If you are new to this: we have a beat tape for you done up by yet another soul dear to me: this time an English bloke called Shmuel - who you will know as the illustrious hoyah of this year's staggering "Set + Setting" LP drop for Bruk - is quite lovingly, with this release, debuting a new voice: Ehye אֶהְיֶה.
Shmuel, it must be said, is a bit of a savant really and his emergence as Ehye - or "I am” in ancient Hebrew - is the "afterhours" selection for Circadian Rhythms. ‘Afterhours’ is, of course, not a real time of day so what do we mean by it? It’s that nebulous time you rarely plan, post night activities, pre sleep, when the pace may need to be slowed…occasionally…the palette needs to be cleansed, the calendar double checked for rogue early meetings, and the need for vibe journey to continue unabated is absolute.
But what does that sound like? Well in this case it sounds a lot like mad funky, bass anchored beats otherworldly yet organic, that slap more urgently than a distressed debutante. No joke, the good Lord Timbaland himself bopped one of these on his beat submission show ("What You Want"). If that is not a seal of approval I am called Sally and run a fish n chips. (I don’t and am not). What I am delighted to say we have in “Forgot My Password” is a post ATL rap, post English trip hop, post your night out, head nod meets IDM affair that blissfully plays by its own rules and establishes its own identity in the first garbled voiced moments of broadcast.
Beat tapes can be definitely hit and miss but this doesn’t bother raising the arm, it’s not here to play ball, it’s here to raid the fridge, steal the AUX, hit on someone, take a puff, drop a profound memorably beautiful analogy for the human condition in a kitchen conversation, ask after a wayward party goer, and finally exit gracefully just when everyone needs to know who it is.
This might be a weird shout but hear me out: much of it reminds me somewhat of the cat Pole who did that insane record of minimal moody tape hissed space hip hop/groove business back in 2003 - you know the one with the faded blue cover - but in this case it's an updated palette: post trap and bass music stylings but non committal to that or any form fully, as we like it. Absolute class servings on this...
