TONY PRICE PRESENTS REQUIEM FOR THE ONTARIO SCIENCE CENTRE, A NEW FULL-LENGTH LP ON HIS MAXIMUM EXPOSURE LABEL THAT PAYS HOMAGE TO THE BELOVED CANADIAN LANDMARK AND RENOWNED BRUTALIST ARCHITECTURAL MARVEL, WHICH WAS ABRUPTLY CLOSED IN THE SUMMER OF 2024.
DESIGNED BY THE LEGENDARY CANADIAN ARCHITECT RAYMOND MORIYAMA, THE ONTARIO SCIENCE CENTRE FIRST OPENED ITS DOORS IN 1969, DURING A PERIOD OF UTOPIAN OPTIMISM IN CANADA WHEN THE FUTURE FELT LIKE A TERRAIN TO BE EXPLORED RATHER THAN A CRISIS TO BE MANAGED.
THE BUILDING’S CASCADING TERRACES AND ANGULAR CONCRETE FORMS SEEMED TO RISE ORGANICALLY FROM THE SURROUNDING DON VALLEY TERRAIN, EMBODYING A DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE CONSTRUCTED AND THE NATURAL—A DIALOGUE THAT ECHOED THE SCIENCE CENTRE’S COMMITMENT TO EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMAN INGENUITY AND THE NATURAL WORLD.
TRAVERSING THE SCIENCE CENTRE’S LABYRINTHINE SPRAWL WAS AN INHERENTLY EXPERIMENTAL EXPERIENCE: A DREAMLIKE JOURNEY THROUGH WINDING CORRIDORS, INTERACTIVE ARCADES, AND DRAMATIC VISTAS THAT EVOKED A PROFOUND SENSE OF WONDER AND DISCOVERY AT EVERY TURN.
TONY’S ALBUM, RICH WITH KALEIDOSCOPIC SAXOPHONE LOOPS, SURREALIST SOUND COLLAGES, AND RETRO-FUTURISTIC SYNTHESIZER MIRAGES, CONJURES HALF-FADED MEMORIES OF THE SCIENCE CENTRE’S NEON-LIT ARCADES, ENDLESS BRUTALIST CORRIDORS, AND UTOPIAN DREAMS OF FUTURES THAT NEVER CAME TO PASS.
JOINED ON TWO EXTENDED COMPOSITIONS BY LONGTIME COLLABORATOR AND SAXOPHONIST COLIN FISHER, REQUIEM FOR THE ONTARIO SCIENCE CENTRE DELIVERS WISTFUL AMBIENT JAZZ REVERIES THAT EVOKE THE SPIRIT OF MORIYAMA’S CREATION IN THEIR PLAYFUL EXPANSIVENESS AND CEREBRAL, DREAMLIKE BEWILDERMENT.
