Maiden’s debut for Body Motion delicately balances searching reflection and forward-gazing experimentation. Drawn from her poems inspired by folklore and fairy tales exploring love and desire, Maiden creates a sonic landscape that is both introspective and dynamic.
The title track, “Siren,” evokes a hazy, ethereal atmosphere with incantatory chanting set against dragged-and-dubbed/looming rung notes, strapped to choppy trap drums. "Siren" brings Jesu retwisting Cocteau Twins via Massive Attack, with the charged doom of Graham Massey's "Army of Me" remix.
The lyrical melancholia of “Desire Line” brings a different pace; edged with frayed distortion, the meandering refrain winds around gossamer, mellifluent vocals, and bound by a woozy half-step that cinches for the final verse. Elements of longing avant-pop/dreampop abstracted through gothy atmos and programmed drums draws in shades of Pale Saints via Bianca Scout.
