The debut release from Ben Shirken, also known as Ex Wiish, is a tribute to the hard drive and all it can hold. Made with a combination of acoustic and electronic methods—everything from Max/MSP and proprietary neural networks to cello and upright bass—the LP transmits a spiritual, digital feeling. Can stained glass pixelate? The drifting textures here sound like some sort of ghostly entity swirling inside of a computer, adding a timeless component to a technological language shackled to time. It’s heavy gear, for sure, and we should expect nothing less from Shirken, the founder of the great label and performance series 29 Speedway.
