For the newest edition of Best Songs, we talked with Anna Luna, a Michigan-based artist who, over the past few years, has been dropping a flurry of mysterious singles that connect the history of internet-native music—everything from bloghouse to witch house—to a host of other styles. We asked the artist about some of her favorite songs for very specific situations. Give her answers a read, and listen to the Anna Luna single “Skin,” below.

Best song to listen to while loitering in a convenience store?

"The Room of Secondary Light" by Harold Budd

My thought process with this is that the transcendental nature of this song might transport the convenience store workers into a Twilight Zone state, making them overlook my loitering crimes.

Best witch house song?

“Frost” by Salem

Beautiful and captures something hauntingly familiar about where I am from. Also, from one Michigan girl to another I have so much respect for Heather Marlatt.

Best song for riding out an energy drink buzz?

“Wild Child” by WEKEED

The energy this song gives me is stronger than one thousand Red Bulls—it's like pure euphoric adrenaline coursing through my veins.

Best 2000s pop song?

“Deja Vu” by INNA (Feat. Bob Taylor)

Romanian pop music makes me feel like I can pretty much do anything with just a couple of dollars and a dream.

Best song to listen to in a graveyard?

“God's Gonna Cut You Down” by Johnny Cash

Self explanatory...

Best song to listen to while eating at a diner?

“There's A Moon Out Tonight” by The Capris

I used to go to Pal’s, an all-pink diner preserved from the 50s. It had booths that were bubblegum pink, pink neon signs, an old jukebox, and the best strawberry milkshakes. A 50s doo-wop song with sweetheart lyrics just fits the scene.

Best song that is just a vocal and a single instrument?

"Elevator Show" by Julie Doiron

Julie Doiron has such a beautiful voice, and I admire how raw and heartfelt her songwriting is. I connect with so many of her songs, especially this one. She inspires me to keep things sweet and simple.

Best song for a road trip?

"We're All We Need" by Above & Beyond (Feat. Zoë Johnston)

I love driving, especially on road trips. I always blast this song. Watching the terrain change over the miles with company feels special. I genuinely feel free on the road, immersed in the journey, the moment, and what's ahead.

Best song to get stuck in your head at an inopportune moment?

“It’s A Fine Day (ATB Radio Edit)” by Miss Jane

This is the song that just shows up in my head and swirls around. It’s just always there.

Best song of 2024?

“Euphoriphilia” by Suzy Sheer

I <3 Suzy Sheer.
