The New York- and Houston-based producer Jetty’s new EP features six songs and six collaborations. On Jetty+, everyone from Jackzebra to Organ Tapes to Ben Bondy grace Jetty’s tracks, lending new textures and ideas to the producer’s wispy, eclectic club music palette. On the occasion of the record, we thought it would be fun to reach out to Jetty and ask him about some of the Best Songs for very specific situations. His responses—and Jetty+—are below. 

Best song for taking a long walk on the beach?

“Only One” by Tekno

I’ve had countless religious Afrobeats moments by the water. Any song can become the best song when you’re taking a long walk on the beach … This song is also on my “play this at my funeral” playlist ... My funeral should be at a beach followed by a long walk.

Best song to listen to at a fast casual restaurant?

“Wish You Were Here” by Incubus 

 

Hardest to answer because so many variables. Thankfully, Five Guys Burgers and Fries has an official Spotify playlist, so this question is now “Best song to listen to at a Five Guys Burgers and Fries?” There were a lot of good ones. Bob Marley “Is this Love” (top 50 of all time), Blind Melon “No Rain,” Killers “When You Were Young,” “Everlong,” “All the Small Things” …  But today I choose to eat the burger with Incubus.

Best song for chilling out?

“Nuwav2” by Terekke and “Family Business” by Kanye West

I listen to that Terekke album at the beginning of a flight, so when we’re lifting off, “Nuwav2” is on. “Family Business” is my last resort spiritual chill out song if I’m about to throw a serious tantrum.

Best song for turning up?

“Work” by Rihanna 

If I’m in a room of miscellaneous 21-40 year olds and need something to play that will bring us together … And you put a gun to my head ... I think Rihanna ”Work”  …  Let me know if I’m wrong in the comments.

Best song by a 2000s dancehall artist?

I’m not qualified to answer this. 

Best song to play really loud in the Best Buy parking lot?

“No Trivia” by From Autumn To Ashes

I bought this CD from Best Buy of Hixson with my allowance money (I mowed the lawn) in 2004 and also sampled it 20 years later on my hit song “Best Buy Parking Lot.”

Best song for casually scrolling?

“My Happy Song” by Super Simple Songs - Kids Songs

I love any reel with the kitty jumping up and down to this song.

Best song for headbanging? 

“Entombment of a Machine” by Job for a Cowboy

At some point in my early teens, my priorities changed from headbanging to punching the air/crowd. I no longer cared if the metal band was a “Christian” metal band, and started to think the violent/scary thing was cool. I chose the Job for a Cowboy track because I remember hearing it for the first time (Computer room, Dayton TN, by brother’s friend Dave). Maybe this is the song that ruined my life.

Best song that makes you think about an early raving experience?

“Lights and Music” by Cut Copy

Early raving experiences didn’t occur for me in Houston until I put on my own events … But one time I took fake Molly and saw Cut Copy. Does that count?

Best song for working out?

“Escolta Suicida (El Corrido de los Zetas)” by Beto Quintanilla
