On the Recreational Murder EP by the Irish producer Casper Hastings, the six-minute opener “Tangerine Meme” sets the tone. It’s an expert electro cut that is made for, depending on your context, either locking in or freaking out—or both. “Ruthless Romance” and “Reaper” are equally as banging and hypnotic. Before you think you got Casper all figured out here, though, the artist drops “Good Medicine,” a washy jungle track that will have you trading your Puma track suit for an MA-1 bomber jacket. Rounding out the EP is a punishing Peder Mannerfelt remix of “Reaper” and the final cut, "Akashita,” which might just be the standout of the bunch. It’s more rigid electro, this time with a bassline that shoots through your skull like tiny, pinprick lasers. A study in genre-focused excellence with a few surprises along the way.
