Secret Bird Tape ’23, the latest release from Montreal-based audio bambino, is a whirlwind mixture of garage, trance, and house. I was posted up in the crib when it mysteriously dropped in my inbox, and the unique flips and samples that pop in and out throughout the tape whisked me away.
The opening track, “Relax (Intro),” ushers you into “Relax (Anthem) by sampling the Universal Pictures theme and blasting DJ tags over it before you’re enveloped with the stylings of DJ Relax, which feel reminiscent of a deepcut from the Jet Set Radio soundtrack, updated for the microscopic attention spans of today. The grooves settle in before you’re hit with bangers like “Eternal Visions” and “Bop It!”, which rework R&B samples and the audio to an iconic childhood game into anthems perfect for the real life games of the kickback, the club, and the rave.
And for the afterparty, the tape sings its swan song with “Aphex Crack,” a nostalgia-inducing take on Aphex Twin’s “Xtal,” layering even more percussion on top of the track, with a squelching bassline that will keep you moving.
