“I will drive you while you sleep” is the one-sentence description of Eterna & Amalcrossing’s 2021 EP Audi, from very cool little Brooklyn label, Unseelie. The rest of the liner notes simply state that the record was written in Eterna and Amal’s flat, “where they lived together for a year.”

This fits the sparse, longing folk-rock-shoegaze-emo that was made in said London flat. Audi has the aura of a collection of trinkets accumulated over many years: here we have a gust of wind, a key thrown into the sea, and a six-inch gold blade (in the heart of a girl), broken spells and chains, timelines, tiny hands, eyes that hide. Each song is an intimate treasure, each expansive but with the sense that one could hold them in their hands, roll them carefully back and forth between palms like glass orbs with tiny cosmos hidden inside.

And yet the whole of Audi is on the move! I will drive you while you sleep is the repeated mantra that closes out “Drive,” which is all smoldering fog and guitar lines that reach into the distance. These very precise songs sound like they were made to hear while driving a sleeping lover down a misty coastal highway. “June” sounds like being achingly amorous in the early summer; the jitter of “Everything Is My Fault” has a paranoiac mood; almost-heartbroken closer “Coffee Eyes” stares at the road ahead sketching sleepless future plans; delicate opener “Vanish” is just out of grasp, fading forward in the most delightful way.
