“My baby’s got diesel in his blood, shooting shotguns filled with love.”
Flannery Silva’s most recent single (as F.G.S.) from the forthcoming full-length Tinker Bell’s Cough is a tease. Flirtatious lyrics sit adjacent to a delicate, guitar-driven arrangement that creates a tension which never releases. “American Shield” is a banger, and Flannery knows it, so she allows it to speak for itself. The chorus begs you to rock out, but just gives you a triangle, a tambourine, some strings. Powerful through restraint.
Sometimes we get to watch an artist build their world, develop their vernacular, and experiment with imagery. This world is certain, complete, and established—we are merely invited to visit. Coupled with a music video shot and edited by Kristie Muller, Silva’s world is a world of familiar rock ‘n’ roll Americana, served through a lens that makes you think you’ve known her songs your whole life. Soda pop, baseball fields, fishnets, and french fries. Like a Disney Princess David Berman, Silva’s songwriting is a force to reckon with.
