God’s Mom is a raver. This new Toronto duo have concocted a name for themselves that stops you in your tracks, and they follow through with music that compliments that ambitious gesture. The perfectly sized release is fun, confident, and goes off with a bang.
This sampling of three tracks would have fit in seamlessly on the Trainspotting soundtrack or as a beloved rave-to-radio breakout hit. They coyly borrow from 90s techno without being cheeky or referential. Where some electronic projects fail to achieve anything more than a nod to an aesthetic, God’s Mom uses their palette to deliver a perfectly honed sense of melody, subtle waves of psy-trance-Enya, and an innate pop sensibility. They’re not shy about dipping into aggressive saw-tooth shredders or hardstyle kicks, never over doing it.
The members of God’s Mom boast impressive resumes spanning scene and genre. Bria makes sultry electro country and plays with Frigs and Orville Peck. Andrew, the group’s other half, plays in the neo-No-Wave Dime Lifters and Whim.
