You are on a beach in Ibiza. The sun is rising. You may or may not have ingested something earlier in the night that will be keeping you awake for at least a few more hours. “Wrong Again” is playing through a modest soundsystem pointed at the ocean. Life is good.

The track is the new single from Jack J, an Australian-born artist and producer who is currently based in Vancouver and is one half of the duo Pender Street Steppers. “Wrong Again” is timeless Balearic breakbeat pop in the best way possible—there’s the organ stabs, the crisp acoustic guitar, and, no doubt, the iconic break. The flip side, if you will, is the cut “Pink Shoes,” which is only a little more than a minute long and serves as the comedown coda to the euphoria of “Wrong Again.”

Both tracks are anchored by a sophisticated vocal that puts the tune in a larger continuum of anglo-informed soul business. Jack J’s forthcoming record is called Blue Desert. It comes out the day after Halloween.
