It’s Monday morning, and I am enjoying my daily cup of coffee with a bit of trip hop. The two things counterbalance each other nicely. The jitteriness of the caffeine is mellowed by the slow thud of the breakbeat. It’s no coincidence that this music was played at cafes all around the world in the 1990s. The track I am listening to today is “Blinkmonth (July Mix)” by James K, a New York staple who has been building a world of electronica for years now. The song is seven minutes long and indeed driven by a drum break. Also: ethereal vocals, woozy pads, and some fluttering reverse-style effects. The track makes me hope a new full-length from James K is around the corner.
