Fall is nearly upon us, but it’s not too late to get your fix of summery beats. NYC by way of London producer Jon Phonics serves up the perfect assortment on his latest tape NUFF SAID. Phonics is a master of the craft of sampling; he weaves together dusty soul records, southern rap acapellas, vintage jazz, and feel-good oddities using his trusted MPC and a couple of synths. The tracks on NUFF SAID are coated with a kind of warm dollar bin dust. You practically inhale it as you listen.
Phonics told Nina: “For NUFF SAID, I used a lot of 80s samples, cowbells and 808s to make a soundtrack for the summertime. Like my DJ sets, I wanted to be versatile, so these joints can be used as tools by DJs, as beats for rappers, or for you to bump start to finish as the perfect instrumental tape when you're driving from one side of Brooklyn to the other.” Having tested this tape on multiple drives across Brooklyn, I can confirm this statement.
