Kilbourne kicks off her new label, Hammerhead, with a bang–or, more accurately, thousands of perfectly distorted bangs expertly sequenced to unleash dance floor mayhem. The title track, “Panopticon,” maintains a relatively mild 150 bpm–mild by Kilbourne’s standards, that is. The track’s sinister and destructive intentions evolve, kick by kick, layer by layer, building up to a satisfying series of full-frequency dirty sonic gut punches. Offering a slight break for the eardrums, “Rolly Polly” features a broken kick pattern propelling the track through deeply saturated 909 workouts and eerie, droning harmonics. Altogether, the two-tracker amounts to a promising start for Kilbourne and her new endeavor.
