Many words have been expended on a purported resurgence of club-adjacent trip-hop—notably in Shawn Reynaldo’s Second Floor piece, ‘Trip-Hop—or Something Close to It— Is Making a Comeback’. When I refer to "club-adjacent," I mean that the music is produced by a spectrum of artists, such as a.s.o. or Hysterical Love Project, who emerged from club-centric music scenes, employing similar techniques and dynamics to create a refreshing take on a worn favorite. Emerging from this discourse is Kissen, an artist based in Berlin who has seemingly appeared out of nowhere with a debut EP consisting of 4D tunes—deep, disorienting, dubby downtempo tracks. The five compositions presented here, crafted, produced, and mixed by Kissen, exude intimacy while being designed to resonate through massive club speakers. An exceptional and promising release.
