The latest installment of Nina Label Mix comes to us from the one and only Good Morning Tapes. Currently located in the sun-kissed coast of Australia, the hybrid label and apparel company have cultivated a sound and aesthetic that is undeniably its own, through its strong connection to surf culture and the natural world.

As Biscuit, the visionary behind GMT, emphasizes, the label's essence extends far beyond ambient music, reflecting a personal taste that spans a diverse range of musical genres.  Featuring releases from artists such as Jonnine, Anthony Naples, Salamanda, and Ben Bondy, whose sonic contributions have enriched the label's vibrant catalog. Alongside these releases, GMT has showcased eclectic mixtapes from the likes of Matt Werth, Cali DeWitt, Matthew Kent, and Misha Hollenbach, further amplifying the label's commitment to inclusivity in musical expression. Breaking free from the constraints of narrow categorizations, GMT continues to evolve, embracing and sharing a broader spectrum of sound with its ‘All Welcome’ mantra.

Listen to Good Morning Tapes’ label mix and read our interview with Biscuit below. This release can be collected for free and comes with a tracklist as bonus material.

Where are you based?

I originally started Good Morning in France in 2017 but I relocated back to Australia late last year.

Can you describe your label mix?

It's just a little stroll through a small part of our catalogue from over the years.

What inspired you to start a label?

I really feel like it happened by accident, but also having encouragement from close friends and higher realms.

It was (and still is) a creative outlet to work with friends & other like minded souls out there.

Does your label have a sound or a mission?

There's definitely been a strong connection to nature from the start, celebrating this and giving thanks has been very important.

I often feel like Good Morning is portrayed as just an ‘Ambient’ label - and it's true it has had those leanings in the past, though it's never been the intention to champion just that sound. I personally listen to a diverse range of music on a daily basis & ‘Ambient’ music is a very small part of that.

So I would really like to see GMT continue to evolve, encompass & share a wider variety of sound - hence our continued ‘All Welcome’ mantra.

What's your A&R process?

Since the beginning I have always tried to collaborate with friends, or someone that I had met on my travels and felt that we shared common life values. But naturally COVID altered the approach and I started accepting demos from people I had never met before and in turn, started to reach out to artists that I admire.

It's always been important for me to get to know a bit about the person before we do something together though, so there's usually a phone call. Just to know a bit more about the person's surroundings...what inspires them...their daily life outside of music...and also just to introduce myself so we're not strangers hiding behind a screen.

That's been the most rewarding part about Good Morning for me personally - meeting new people and making friends. I also want contributors to feel like they're part of a larger family at Good Morning who they can reach out to.
