Today, the Los Angeles-based artist Lara Sarkissian put out her debut album. It’s called Remnants, and it comes on the heels of an EP, Born of the Sea, released earlier in the year. Broadly speaking, the record is a synthesis of traditional Armenian music with sounds and styles culled from the history of contemporary electronic and dance. Sarkissian deploys digitally-modeled acoustic instruments alongside electronics; this music feels like it is at once rushing towards the future and being pulled back into the ancient world. One particular highlight is “Miracle,” a singular take on rough jungle music. Throughout, the record’s crunchy drums have an almost geologic presence. We interviewed Sarkissian about Born of the Sea around the time of its release; give it a read and listen to both releases on Nina.
