Last winter, I spent some time in a small town in the north of Italy. Walking down the main drag one evening, a tall figure in front of me slipped on some ice and yelled “Oh fuck” as their phone went flying. That was how I met Levi Lucio. We exchanged phone numbers and made plans to meet for a drink later, as it was unusual to run into Americans in that part of the world.
Over a series of cocktails, Lucio told me about growing up in Houston, about the scene he was adjacent to, and about how all he wants to do is make deep house music. Six months later, we have CD Guis Moo, a 4-track EP of highly-mixable deep house. The young producer demonstrates a mature sense of restraint, allowing grooves to blossom in their own space. It’s quite refreshing in the era of nonstop drops and stimulacore post-hyperpop. Think of a sunset set in 2000s Ibiza. It’s Balearic music from the Oil Capital of the World.
The second track, “YOU CAN'T MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY,” features seductive vocals beckoning: “What you gonna do? Are you gonna come closer? Are you gonna stare forever? Do you want to get to know me?” The brief EP is a groovy, rewarding handful of deep house experiments. It underlines Lucio as a producer to watch.
