Material Things is the brainchild of Stewart Brown, the co-founder of a delightful Glaswegian indie label called 12th Isle, and 2015-2020 is a sampling of some of the collaborations he’s racked up with over the years. Each track features different players and sounds totally distinct; there’s apparently no unifying theme beyond the guiding spirit of friendship, and the joy of making music together. “Westway,” hearty and spacious, is all about plucked guitar, while “No Direction” is a far-out percussive odyssey. Nothing is fixed, everything is up for grabs. Listening to this collection, one gets the sense Brown wants to keep it that way.
