Mother is Glasgow’s Mark Maxwell, formerly an assistant to John Peel, and Live ‘23 is his ambitious first stab at compiling his solo performances on wax. It succeeds—wildly. We’re looking at two sides, 45 minutes each, both of which are misty, submerged, and subtly complex. With shades of Burial, Mica Levi, and Geoff Barrow’s score for Annihilation, Live ‘23 is a truly cinematic ambient record. The opening track, “Live at The Old Hairdressers,” is a prismatic dystopia; the second half, “Live at La Chunky,” almost seems to breathe, conjuring up images of wet caverns and steamy alien worlds.
