On his second album, the Paris-born, Berlin-based sound artist Nexcyia takes a focus on storytelling. The story in question: his family’s migration to Los Angeles from Texas in the 1970s. The tools used: samples and sound design. The result: sheets upon sheets of dense, detailed sonic testaments, which warp and unfurl the artist’s deeply personal source material into something that moves beyond the limits of narrative—and language—altogether. It’s ambient music whose depth of feeling comes from a place outside of the music. You can hear the story in the sound.
