Nick Malkin’s track “Chanel No. 5” positions itself somewhere around the sonic crossroads of Gigi Masin and Jon Hassell; live trumpet over a mellow yet ominous Eb minor ostinato with some Rainforest Cafe ambiance could describe music from both artists’ output from the mid-80s onward, but it doesn’t feel rear guard from Malkin—his has a more distinctly club-geared sound with its pulsating 16th note sequence driving the track without a didactic kick to root it squarely in four (though the bass functions as that anchor). This gives it a floating feel worthy of many Mancusian (Mancunian?) loft anthems like Sun Palace “Rude Movements” and other come-down classics, suggesting but not forcing you to move your ass. We’re premiering “Chanel No. 5” here.
