Number 1 Interview Series is about Firsts and Debuts and Geneses and Solitude and Premieres. You are reading a work of Oneness. You are reading the Number One (1) interview series in the world ever of all time and absolutely. There is only one One.

Today The One is W3BCAM. We premiere his song “Trust Melody.”

True visionaries are rarely recognised in their time. It’s no one’s fault. Artistic output is as a kind of bottomless yummy pie, infinite in quantity and gorged on by the ravenous locust swarm that is our collective content appetite. “Yummy,” we say as we cram (listen to) fistfuls (earfuls) of content pie (music) into our holes (mouths (ears)). “Mmmmm,” we moan as we rub our distended tum-tums raw. “Mmmmmmmmmmmmm,” we moan once more.

It feels good. But it’s never enough. Our gluttony can’t be satisfied, but the conveyor belt of low-grade content confections has no horizon. They call it the feed (!) for a reason. The slop trough overflows. But emulsified within is real nutritional value—the base flavas that lend the upper layers their tantalising je-ne-sais-quoi.

alt

Which brings me to W3BCAM. A secret-sauce secreter whose music has wrenched untold quantities of SoundCloud-lurking hearts. An individual whose secrete sauce, consciously or otherwise, can be detected in coagulated form within the work of certifiably Big stream-hoarding artists—artists I can’t name for fear of career-complicating repercussions.

This is a guy whose pitched-up, bedazzled melodies and sugar-armoured club aphrodisiacs arguably laid out a blueprint that preceded the blown-out, maximalist emo-pop making waves today. He’ll roll his eyes, and he’d be right to. Because, for all the artists he’s made the mould for, the essence of W3BCAM’s music finds closer kinship in Chief Keef’s Auto-Tuned freakazoid pop deep-cuts, Alex G’s intuitive melody mastery, and the best of Sam Ray’s wry-meets-wistful bedroom pop

alt

We’re talking about a songwriter first and foremost. A guy whose work continues to trickle down to the algo-appeasing DAWs of sauce-spongers set to underwhelm household-name festivals this summer. An artist who co-incubated an insanely influential Discord-mediated microscene alongside contemporaries and collaborators like Aidan Swank, rainfield, bleachblonde, lyustra, Remy Cechovic, digiaches, meltawaylikematter (f.k.a. protectedcharms) and Cedric Madden. A game-propelling vocalist and producer, but an earworm-spawner above all. Cases in point.

We drop “Trust Melody,” off loooong-teased upcoming release Something Happened.

We also speak of Ones.

You have one day to live, because I'm going to kill you. Your demise is unavoidable and non-negotiable. What do you do with this day?

I’m sitting on the porch in the sun drinking a lemonade or something awaiting death gallantly…

One product you endorse and consent to being the face, body and voice of.

Capri Sun Pacific Cooler.

First thing you'll do with the 1.11 million Canadian dollars I will PayPal you.

Down payment on small house in Nova scotia or something to never ever leave … And a huge piano.

You're making your debut appearance for the sports team of your choosing. What team and what's your walkout song?

I’m the waterboy for a Canadian javelin competitor and my song would be “I Bet It Stung” by Tegan and Sara and everyone is clapping and cheering really hard ‘cos I’m really good at getting water for our champion.

Your public enemy number one, living or dead.

New York City TBH and the online posts I see from there.

A beloved one-hit wonder.

I like the song “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago and I’ve never listened to another song by them so I choose that.

alt

The number one reason individuals should listen to the new W3BCAM release ‘[Something Happened].'

Because I’m a bastion of real music and it is coming str8 from the HEART…

One life. What’s happened? What do you want to happen?

A lot has happened but also not a lot. I’ve just existed through it all and really I just want to find a simple comfortable and peaceful existence and a way to achieve that.

One object you hold dear.

My ghost rare dark magician (Yugioh card) ~ And this stuffed animal my girlfriend got for me.

alt

A journey of one thousand miles begins with a single step. Where do you begin your journey? What do you consider the pivotal first step on your path to Now?

My friend Tanner being very very kind and patient and teaching me how to use FL Studio in 2016 or something over the course of a couple weeks is probably most pivotal to making music N stuff, and then meeting Aidan Swank and bleachblonde online.

It's nice to look out for number one. What does self-care look like for you?

I realised a couple years ago that I needed to allow myself to spend time just doing simple enjoyable nothings detached from everything like watching Pirates of the Caribbean movies N eating candy or something. Realising that spending time doing dumb things that bring me comfort is not a waste but is important to my wellbeing. Not interrogating myself over that crap no more … SIMPLE.
