Oghu is a producer who has laced a lot of tracks for his brother Marlon Dubios—both are members of Shed Theory, an East Coast rap collective that pushes a somewhat mysterious form of experimental rap, one whose beats blend rap low end with an attention to sonic detail that has a lot in common with IDM and ambient music. So it’s not all that surprising that the music on SenderReceiver, Oghu’s debut record of solo electronic music, uses the palette he has built making beats as a jumping-off point to delve into music that swerves away from rap production. Though some of the best moments on the record—I’m thinking about the tune “Lore Dealer”—are still rhythmic in one way or another, this is music that is closer to Boards of Canada than Lil B. On the cover, Oghu wears a wizard’s cloak.
