There’s something beautiful about watching the familiar continue to grow and develop, like a sapling planted in a yard that eventually matures into a willow tree. The latest Organ Tapes single “Waiting” has all of the signatures of the artist we’ve gotten used to—gorgeous guitar riffs twist together with layered Auto-Tune crooning, somewhere between a folk song, a dream pop cover, and an SME TaxFree ballad—and, like a giant willow, provides sonic shade for scorching days. The B-side “For Now” situates a muddled blend of luminous voices over dancehall drums, adding moments of pop to a blur of reverb. Once again, Organ Tapes seem to effortlessly blend past and present, reminding us that the fetishized future, the one that seems so often to be lost, can still be created. Then the song snaps us back into the present moment. A tree grows so slowly that its change isn’t perceptible on a daily basis, but when we lie in its shade, we see how long its shadows have become.
