LUCKY is a new compilation curated by the Austrian label Plot Toy. Over 13 tracks, the label presents an electric musical vision, one not without mirth, one rooted in experimentation but not adhering to any singular stylistic position. There seems to be an interest in music that incorporates spoken word, from the compilation’s opener—Dean Rodney Jr. & The Cowboys “The Man with The Golden Suit”—to the legendary Mark Leckey’s “Carry Me into The Wilderness” and Aase Nielsen’s “Daily Affirmation.” Elsewhere, New York experimental mainstay CS Yeh contributes a karaoke-like cover of “Slow Hand” by Conway Twitty, and Trii Grouping, an offshoot of the longstanding German group TRjj, etc., presents a wobbly piece of synth improvisation. It all makes for a pleasantly beguiling listen. Profits from the release benefit two worthy organizations: Queerbase and MAP - Medical Aid for Palestinians.
