Releases on Kilbourne’s imprint Hammerhead seem to deliver on the promise of the label’s name. RABBeAT’s What's That, Who's There is no exception. Over eight tracks of horror-coded hardcore, the Lyon-via-Madagascar makes music sure to annihilate even the most seasoned raver’s eardrums. Though there’s stampedes of distorted kick drums, blood curdling vocal samples, and shiver-inducing atmospherics, the record is far from one-note. Its finest moments come in the contrasts of darkness and light. “Escape” and “Escape (Dub Mix)” kick off with a muddy and emotive boom-bap beat that wouldn’t feel out of place in the Dean Blunt universe. But don’t get too comfortable. These tracks hammer kick drums over your head until you’re but a stub of your former self.
