Emilie Palmelund is a visual artist, musician, and a former touring member of the London band bar italia. Under the name Rita P, Palmelund currently has three singles and one collaboration under her belt. Her newest single, “Rita Picks Problems,” came out today; it comes on the heels of previous releases “Rita’s Pest” and “Rita Poser.” Besides an interest in alliteration, what these three tunes have in common is an elusive, brooding quality, one that perfectly matches with the feeling of walking through rain-streaked streets. We sent over some questions to Rita P. Read the interview, listen to “Rita Picks Problems,” and check out the song's adjoining video—all below.

Who is Rita P?
A period drama.
Is Rita more of a Pest or a Poser?
Both.
What is the ideal setting to listen to Rita P?
The songs are quite different from each other but I’d probably be on the move while listening, there's some tense restlessness in them.
The “Rita’s Pest” video is mesmerizing. What was it like making it?
Mostly embarrassing since I had to make this big headwear with loads of gaffer tape and a camera attached to it, walking around on my own, looking like I was protecting myself from 5G networks while making conspiracy films. Sometimes I had friends coming with me though, and that was quite fun and a good excuse to have a drink or walk around central London for hours. It kind of became this object I just brought with me anywhere I went.
Any good stories from touring with bar italia?
So many stories! One goes all the way back to the beginning when Colin Greenwood showed up to the fourth gig I played with bar italia (and only two months into me learning to play bass). We played at the Jericho Tavern in Oxford, the first place that Radiohead ever played which is made very clear by the massive mural of the band in the main room. It was quite nerve wrecking and we all were losing our minds a bit. When we were on the way to the stage, Colin clapped us on the shoulder and made sure to stand with a perfect view of us all and a little video camera to film the performance. After the gig he came up to us and complimented my bassplay, I turned so red in my face that I couldn’t say anything in response.
Can you name one song released in 2024 that you love?
Eterna’s “Highbury Grunge.”
Are there any gadgets that are important to the Rita P sound?
Pennies and Purses.
You’ve released two songs so far. What does the future hold for Rita P?
I’m working on an album that will be released on Jane Records this year and with that I will start playing solo live shows.
