Talvi’s “A New Door Is Closing” is a shadowy departure from the synth pop roots we are familiar with from the Toronto-based artist. The song’s sparse instrumentation beckons you through a hypnotic landscape of memories you don’t have, like a despondent lament for things that have not occurred and will not happen.
After an opening movement that hints it may be another disposable swing at Lana, ‘New Door’ veers left, into a tense, uncomfortable, and sadly beautiful composition. Tasteful vocal arrangements hit a unique middle zone between Radiohead and Frank Ocean’s Blonde era. It resists every temptation to resolve into cheap, pop triumph. The song is tense and uncomfortable, yet rich and evolving. Talvi says of the sweet, mournful tune: “It’s a love song about time. That’s pretty much all.”
