The Spatulas are a group in the great PNW/K Records/twee lineage, but the title track, ‘March Chant In April,’ from their upcoming record March Chant (out soon on Dean Spunt of No Age’s longtime label Post Present Medium), is a strange album opener, a singular track of blown out female voice with sloppy, overdriven, peel slowly and see Ostrich guitar and cha cha box, channeling the inept pop naivete of the Shaggs with Sebadohic lo-fi charm (and frankly a little bit of the Shadow Ring in there too, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking). The rest of the record sounds nothing like it. The rest of the record sounds like the Vaselines. Which is cool. But the first track is also cool, in a different way.

Staff PicksChanneling the inept pop naivete of the Shaggs, the title track off ‘March Chant,’ the group’s forthcoming album, sounds nothing like the rest of the album. That’s a good thing.
