It’s easy to get lost in the trappings of 90s indie pastiche—angsty guitars, filtered drum tracks, analog fuzz—but when done right, those elements can (still!) add up to something immensely satisfying. PLASTER GIRL, the new EP from the Toronto-based outfit Thermal, takes that mandate and runs with it. Yes, the first ten seconds of “18” sound a little like “Everlong,” but there’s a sweet, cherry-ice tinge to this music that’s entirely its own. Sunset riffs and gauzy textures are anchored by a killer vocal from Lauren Armstrong: there’s real power in the ache of her delivery. Individual lyrics tend to get lost in the haze; good thing the feeling’s all you need.
