The Austrian producer Toupaz makes intricate, polyrhythmic dance music that uses the long, strong history of UK bass music as a jumping off point for sonic exploration. The producer’s new EP for the Parisian label Grid comprises four tracks that somehow have the ability to sound like you are listening to them in headphones, even if they are playing through your phone speaker. My favorite track is “Birdsong,” a sort of fusion of IDM and dancehall that I imagine would sound excellent through a big sound system at a function in Bristol.
