The new track, “The Worm Should Have a Treat,” from Wilted Woman, moniker of Berlin-based producer and engineer Lizzie Davis, is a good-humored slowburn of a production. With a foot in both techno and more abstract computer music, Davis plays with expectation as the track unfolds from a single diatonic bassline using an M1-esque organ patch (you know the sound), slowly becoming more chaotic as semi-random (algorithmic?) flurries of notes burst through the placid texture, reminding me of Roc Jiménez de Cisneros’ work. This continues until eventually (here’s where I start to conjecture about the process behind the track) the probability of notes decreases greatly, giving way to large amounts of silence broken up by the occasional organ note and computer music flourishes. Finally, at almost 2/3s of the way through the track, a halftime kick comes in, relieving the tension and bringing us back home.
