‘Hydra’ is just that: a glossy, imposing, many-headed behemoth—a gloriously complex, self-contradicting mass that roars and wriggles and never lets up. These 12 songs are the work of the Tokyo-based producer Yolabmi, who leans hard on a sound that you might call “synthetic crunch.” The tone of these songs is difficult to capture in more concrete terms, which is a plus in my book; there’s more than enough here to keep you puzzled and puzzling. I like the Visible Cloaks vibes of “Huge” and the gloopy resonance of “Irreversibility.”
