PARODYSE CITY is a broken requiem that grapples with the simmering turbulence of an incomprehensible and oppressive reality. Vangoth666’s DIY debut album marks the end of a vicious cycle of private anguish and presents a hopeful reimagining of Singapore through the use of deconstructive methods and parody, where vagabond emotions can coalesce into discursive loops. Utilizing methods of sampling and remixing — Vangoth666 repurposes hauntological material towards a new musical language, evoking a deep sense of urban disorientation, exposing the malignant yet tender underbelly of Singapore.
Like a virus, Vangoth666 holds no allegiances, operating off pure instinct, it feeds off the intangible (spirits) of the moment, unearthing dormant affinities in disorder. Vangoth666 mutates and flourishes within a fertile ground of hidden forces. Influenced heavily by the harsh and existential sounds of post metal, punk and noise, tempered by earworm pop music and the melancholic haze of shoegaze, energized by choppy hip-hop and breakcore, Vangoth666 finds ways to cannibalize its multitude of hosts, destroying old pathogens, metastasizing into a radical new sound.
Track 1: part 1
A draconian interpretation of our perfect metropolis through the repetition of the word ‘limpei’, an integral expression within hokkien vernacular and an iconic term in Singaporean popular media (CC: ‘I not stupid’).
Track 2: time is a flat circle
“Its 4:30, the tv goes on, I lie down on the sofa in anticipation of sabotage. I fall asleep, it’s hot, I get up, my vision is hazy, the tinkling of wind chimes guide me, a dream begins. 10 years later >>> 2017, Channel 8 is on, it’s a different drama with the same outcome. >>> 2018, I’m drunk as fuck, puking my guts out, a friend whips out a phone sealing the fate of this shameful moment. I luxuriate in my own vomit; my mind murmurs gently “when does this end?” Fast forward >>> 2023, I drift in and out of these technicolor visions, I write a song.” — Vangoth666
Based on the producer’s childhood memories of watching Taiwanese drama with his grandma daily, slipping in and out of humid afternoon dreams with the OST of “情难忘” playing in the background.
Track 3: Swamp lilith
Something turns beneath the surface, threatening to disrupt the smug equilibrium of our peaceful existence. Swamp lilith is created out of the discarded fragments of tracks 1,2 and 4 — a sonic aberration — bits and pieces chafe against one another and erode, sounding the noxious rot of comfort.
Track 4: Parodyse
"I picture us as undercover assassins masquerading as passive commuters, cool dispatchers. We are everyday heroes carrying out our mundane tasks with criminal airs. Music is our W A R F A R E, disrupting the quiet sanctity of Parodyse City." — Vangoth666
