GOLDENGUAPS knows ball. Two years ago, I threw on “intro / christian benteke freestyle” and dropped my phone while reading a comment about how the track had that name because Angel was “at the crystal palace like christian benteke.” I watched my phone fall onto the court and shatter into a million pieces. It didn’t matter. I kept hooping.
This compilation of tracks is dripping with real based swag. It hits you right from the jump with “F*ck KD,” a delirious riff on the eponymous Lil B track anchored by a Dollhouse beat somewhere between jerk, baile, and hard techno. It becomes a sermon on the importance of staying rare and a reminder to never ringchase. Real hoopers will also love “Gilbert Arenas,” where GOLDENGUAPS slides over pounding 808s and a gorgeous synth melody while name-dropping the titular Agent 0, the ever-based Kreayshawn, and two-time NBA All-Star Antawn Jamison.
Another standout is the Prblm-assisted “Had a Little Problem”—GOLDENGUAPS drops bars about Prada and bitches who go to Barnard with an effortless, effervescent flow. The instrumental is crazy positive, its bass activates, and the melody injects you with energy. Simply put, it’s a standout collaboration among a sea of incredible work between the 1c34 and Nova Gang collectives. The track, and the entire comp, is movement music, whether you’re skating or sliding in the whip. It’s motion music, it makes you want to run it up, get outside, get active.
