Beat Detectives are Chris Hontos and Aaron Anderson—the do-anything Brooklyn polymaths that brought you those trippy lyric videos for Bon Iver’s i, i, and have produced a whopping 21 projects together since 2012. Legal Weed, their newest release, is ostensibly “weed-themed,” and yet it’s improbably in tune with the fact that weed has never been less cool than it is at this exact moment (you can’t walk five minutes in today’s Brooklyn, as these guys well know, without encountering a “zaza” peddler). For this duo, legal weed is a mantra, a meme, and a jumping-off point for those 3D renders of unbothered leaves on the album cover. Don’t think too hard about it, man. “Gandalf OG” is maybe the trippiest strain here: a mishmash of jungle drums, split-second King Crimson samples, and off-kilter production that leaves everything feeling a little askew. Strong stuff; indulge responsibly.
