The intro to Callahan & Witscher’s new song “Long Drive” appears to reference the opening of the 1999 Sugar Ray smash “Every Morning.” It lays the groundwork for the duo to spin a song whose lyrical content first comes across like a teen movie about noise musicians doing a medical study, then turns into a rock and roll road narrative—a remembrance of bad tours past. Nina’s Jack Callahan and his collaborator Jeff Witscher are known for their work in noise and experimental music circles; here, with Sedona featuring on the chorus, they write something approaching a pop song. Within the larger scope of their collective body of work, the music takes on a meaning that transcends the tropes they wield.
