The title of São Paulo artist DJ LHC’s newest collection of tunes alludes to the 1990s, and musically it contains a lot of callbacks to that decade. It’s a jungle record full of samples. “BATALHA DO TANQUE,” for example, flips a Black Rob classic to excellent effect. Spoiler alert: RIO DE JANEIRO 1997 (Lost and Found Mixtape) was not made in the 90s, but rather that hazy chunk of time between 2020 and 2022. It’s a fact that becomes more clear the more you listen. The EP also contains a few baile funk samples; we are not sure if people sampled baile funk on jungle records in the 1990s, in Brazil or otherwise, but please, sound off in the comments if we are wrong about that (don’t forget to like and subscribe, either). Then there’s a track like “DRUM N SAMBA,” which is the kind of rolling business that some people probably do associate with classic Brazilian drum and bass. One thing we know: Jungle heads are eating good this week!
