The octave synth bassline. You can’t really go wrong. It’s been there for all of us through the good times and the bad, the thick and the thin. And here it is again on “Rosy Boas,” the new single from Maraschino, a project from NYC-based artist Piper Durabo, formerly of the band Puro Instinct. The song is hooky atemporal dance music that fits somewhere in the cracks between Italo disco, hypnagogic pop, and 80s radio fare. It would’ve sounded good in 2008 or 1984. And it sounds good right here, right now, in the year of our Lord 2024. Somewhere out there, a disco ball light shines on a feathered boa.
