Mica Levi was at the front of the experimental pop band Micachu and the Shapes (later renamed Good Sad Happy Bad). Since then, they have established themselves as a formidable soundtrack composer, having collaborated multiple times with the director Jonathan Glazer, most recently on the 2023 film The Zone of Interest, which won the Soundtrack Award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

“slob air” marks Levi’s debut for the label Hyperdub; it’s a stylistic left turn from an artist known for stylistic left turns. It’s 12 minutes of driving drums, buried vocals, and high-key sheets of synth strings. Maybe you could connect it to genres like dream pop or shoegaze, but it seems to be just outside of any of those containers. Recommended summer listening!
