Abstracted from its main context—the music on this release was, first and foremost, created for a gala celebrating the New Theater Hollywood—Opening Night, the new EP from the Danish composers MK Velsorf & Aase Nielsen, sounds like it could soundtrack a moody police procedural set in Los Angeles. And I say that with high praise! This is jazzy music for lonely city nights. The pieces were created for e-guitar, e-piano, and backing tracks and have a misty, hard-boiled feel—an atemporal kind of digi-noir. It’s no coincidence that, in a press release, the composers cite the legendary Law & Order tunesmith Mike Post as an influence. Put it on as you drive around Hollywood late at night in a paranoid state. Life: It’s a movie.
