Nu Jazz is an eclectic assemblage of New York City musicians who dissolve the conventions of genre like Alka-Seltzer in water. Within the group, you will find electronic producers, members of digital hardcore bands, and, of course, jazz players. The music Nu Jazz makes reflects this diversity. One highlight of their new performance compilation Live Jazz is “Cock Out,” which is taken from the band’s set at last year’s Bang On A Can's Long Play festival. It is somehow funky and punky and spacey and direct at the same time. It sounds like a hardcore kid showed up to a late-night acid jazz jam, grabbed the mic, and just started riffing. Then the sun rose, and the whole crew hit a diner.
