The sophomore release on ost sounds like taking a long walk through a hazy reptilian jungle in a world far, far away. It’s also an exercise in downtempo lore building: Shinetiac’s OG cut “Star Frog Dilla”—first heard on the collaborative trio of Ben Bondy, Pontiac Streator, and Shiner’s 2023 debut on West Mineral Ltd—is re-interpreted by a cast of artists that, taken as a whole, could be seen as the post-ambient version of The Avengers. From Hysterical Love Project’s deep slo-mo remix mix to jp’s breaky “Little Shinety Clouds remix,” no Starfrog is left unturned. Here, the Starfrog universe reveals itself as a lush and fruitful land, full of rewards and surprises.
