“Playground,” the new single by the Tokyo-via-France unit Tapeworms, conjures up images of boundless Y2K-era optimism. The song’s combination of electronica, shoegaze, and bitcrushed, almost chiptune-ish sonics points to an aesthetic that looks backwards in an attempt to find a new way forward. Spiritually, if not sonically, this music feels in conversation with CFCF’s great 2021 record Memoryland as much as it references the legendary Shibuya-kei bands of the 1990s. An excellent single. The project’s forthcoming record, Grand Voyage, is out April 11th via Music Website.
