Given Mr. Weaver’s background playing with artists such as Anna St. Louis, Widowspeak, Hand Habits, and John Andrews, it’s no surprise the man behind Ruby of Thanks has a knack for penning breezy ‘n’ mystical indie folk in the spirit of Little Wings, Cut Worms, or just about anything on the seminal Woodsist label. Major highlight “Focus Blue” is one of the prettiest songs about a Chevrolet Cavalier ever put to tape, meanwhile “Do You Need Me Baby” perfectly encapsulates the laidback, quasi-psychedelic vibe of upstate New York; Weaver’s easygoing vocals are backed by acoustic guitars and gentle percussion, a total mood in our book. Closing tune “Joey Ripple” finishes off the album strong with its grand Mellotron and vocal arrangements, channeling the aura of a private press record from the ‘70s. It’s some of the best indie folk we’ve heard in a while, avoiding all of the clichés associated with the genre nowadays.
