Can you tell us about this track/release?
The song “Ja no et tinc” is part of the album Caos sota el cel. At a moment when the song was becoming too beautiful, we thought of giving it a giant punch, somehow inspired by a quote from Brian Eno that we had hanging up, which says something like much of modern art is the sound of things getting out of control, of a medium reaching its limit and breaking.
What's your process?
We don't have a fixed process for making music at all. We like to experiment. Each song starts in a different way and takes us on a unique journey, which is what makes it exciting. We often say it’s like a laboratory for conducting experiments.
Many times, we start with something like, “I want this song to sound like a mix of blue and yellow” or “I want a part that sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks running down a road in Cabo de Gata.” Sometimes it begins with a phrase, other times with a rhythm, a dream, a philosophical concept, playing with some synths, a feeling that we want to get rid of, an artist who has inspired us, or even a short film we've imagined in our minds.
What I do have to say is that for the album that you can find on Nina Protocol titled Caos sota el cel, we did have some clear starting points, some rules of the game, and from there, we began experimenting.
Tell us about the scene in Barcelona.
There is a lot of talent and all kinds of projects. For me, what’s missing is more interconnection between all these communities and different disciplines to make it even richer. I love the work that the people at El Pumarejo do. Lately, I've attended a few Me Siento Extraña parties, and honestly, the atmosphere has been really great. The Sin Sync collective is teaching friends how to DJ, and I think it's wonderful that it exists. Honestly, there’s a lot happening in the city.
Who are your favorite local artists?
To name a few: Nina Emocional, Jason Kolàr, Jokko Collective, Hamill Industries, Mau Morgó, Oscila, and Anna Carreras.
Who are your biggest influences?
Eloi (who also paints) is very influenced by Joan Miró. We have a long list of influences and are very eclectic in our tastes, both artistic and musical, but to name three or four all time musical artists that we both love: Dean Blunt, Aphex Twin, Kate Bush and the voice of GOD a.k.a. Elisabeth Fraser, and Cocteau Twins.
Any shoutouts?
Shoutout to Julian Assange, I hope he is enjoying life.
